It's similar in sound to many of the early Ace Tone/Roland boxes with one big difference: it has an enormous built-in speaker cabinet. It's a monster!
These were originally invented as rhythmic accompaniment for organists so most of the early drum machines you see have preset patterns like foxtrot, bossa nova, waltz and the like and this one in no exception. It's pretty limited but it does allow you to adjust the mix somewhat and there are a couple of rocker switches that will give you a little fill or variation.
Watch this space for more on unusual vintage drum boxes, we have a collection of them in our studio and I'll be taking pics and recording them for posts here in the near future.Darren Emanuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09497828724997598107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8050283426092378024.post-58477073954468994612009-03-11T15:00:00.000-07:002009-03-11T15:09:22.692-07:00Recording A Midnight Gun<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNAVNnizxOHAr_ZVxgEBK_3Ab47C_IQSMlfxS1hi4RKgaH9YHh7DU6VR3pqXIEehYB8wzIssjeLtJRH4gwvJ_z_FL3RJJVl9Ylj0SVjj90LRbbDcsJMcc1fj3EL71xfvlk9uO57RPikXs/s400/IMG_8583.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312055429494893522" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJeMxkPudl5aqJzhRk7qC3nNI-9cWNtlagJ7qx2ZSa8E7o87s8Z5cZ0FwXDqofbxuigelYGm2nMACdmx7LDGipRcmro5kCaW4IL8by0Gv3mxpnKwIPwQQa0waGg0ZYciQ70szcUAwAobE/s400/IMG_8581.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312055418716238898" />
I meant to post about this back in December but misplaced the pics, but just found them.
AMG (A Midnight Gun) are a new band we worked with in the studio in December. They have a sound all their own and are really pushing to do something personal and different. The band is Phillip on guitar and vocals, Joe on keys and vocals and Julio on drums.
The EP was recorded over a few weeks, we used a lot of mics we have around, namely the Neumann KM84 which is breathtaking on the guitar, standards like the RE-20, 57's 58's etc. The real star was a cool Audix pencil condenser which shocked us all with it's detail and sheer mojo.
We had a chance to DI through the new Aphex 207 tube pre which performed admirably and we tracked a couple of the vocals through it as well as the shaker tracks.
Of course we had to get some Space Echo on it here and there for some vintage vibe and I mixed using it as a reverb in places.
We made good use of the excellent Sir vst reverb on most of the mixes with a Lexicon 480L hall impulse.
All in all a very creative and enjoyable project and I'm looking forward to working with these guys soon. Check them out on their site or at Myspace and download the EP for free:

http://www.amidnightgun.com

www.myspace.com/amidnightgunDarren Emanuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09497828724997598107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8050283426092378024.post-80890072586656073802009-03-11T11:35:00.000-07:002009-03-11T11:44:10.942-07:00Korg Polysix & SC Drumtraks<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj65hkVM5HcLFgQnhmQoF9oMSE_H8Dl4v8evcnjCRx-BkCqtPic-Bd06iQqA99yk5ZJIViZ-Fal9A3mNE0Z2m078BgH0dUuKnRJBvdynTMKYbV_uUzP5pIcraS7CRWirDWcBShzR_LqFdM/s400/IMG_9396.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312002794622673362" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpktTAQAlhyphenhyphenQTna9HhhZkujbv4FNfoCAytNjEdCYc1hS8GCU60OvtxoTS7CLk8j4NlzjjPR8EPRCPGxnq4BRi4R1IN9LwSTaQ-vmd6H6CQUIjrP5O8sTpkWY4uChKH2CkeNdDDgfitVC0/s400/IMG_9378.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312002788020768034" />
Just got a Korg Polysix in. Everything went pretty well with the new set up, except the loo going on the fritz!
These guys have a great sound combining elements of late '60's early 70's era Stones and Who with the atmosphere and energy of more recent UK artists like the Verve and plenty of southern jam for good measure. A very satisfying sound indeed.
We recorded to a digital setup at 24/88.2Khz and stemmed everything down to 1/2 inch tape and sent it back through the tubes to final mix. I had a chance to use some cool new plugs in the mix including the Waves API stuff which really brought some character to the drum bus, as well as the amazing freeware Dominion transient designer-style compressor to get the drums to cut through even more.
For drum mics we used the usual 57's and 58's as well as a pair of SE1's for overheads. We tracked 7 channels of Ron's drums and one channel of Chris bass DI'd through a TL Audio Fat Man 2 Pre/Compressor.
We set up Trey in the hall and mic'd his AC30 with a 58 on the grill and another about ten feet away and ten feet up, flipped the phase and got some great tone. We put my Space Echo in his effects chain for a more retro sound and some of that tape grit. Worked well.
For Kevin's guitar, I wanted to distinguish it a bit from Trey's so we used a 60's Silvertone tube amp and it plays nicely against the Vox amp. On the lead vocal we used a Rode NT1 FET micthrough a Presonus tube pre and that seemed to do the trick.

Overall I was pleased with the results we got in just a couple of 4 hour sessions. Next up to finish the mix. Check back for that.......Darren Emanuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09497828724997598107noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8050283426092378024.post-60912294794931084982008-10-16T09:08:00.001-07:002008-10-16T09:09:35.122-07:00Studio Up and Running<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7vIf5tk7MsDjNxfOttI0flob6scHnCdjepDf5lIrFTijPV1YGWNLtgI43WAMWeyn1luqWbsdPcBn5nZWzeMfrG5G3KVOjZ4cXTx2ROjfll8EmuUy0D4ApO6YF6Kds9yqrfP8ZZBCTPYQ/s400/Inner+Lights+Live.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5257784494128313554" />
We finally have our studio set up and underway at Musicwise. I think we'll be offering a unique situation; a music store with vintage and used gear and a studio around back. The cool part is that any of our inventory can be used for sessions when you book with us. So if don't own a cool tube amp,a Rhodes or a Space Echo you can have access to one when you track here. And our inventory changes all the time so take advantage, the rates are really good.
Our first full band project is with Inner Lights. We tracked these guys over the past couple of weeks and they sound fantastic. We tracked some of it to 8 channel tape and the rest to digital. While before the PR team at least made an attempt to make it seem like artists were priority #1, they seem to have given up: the RIAA is now trying to cut down artist's royalties on digital downloads.

Yes, the RIAA doesn't think the record companies are making enough and that musicians are clearly making too much. I mean, they get 13% now. Like they deserve 13% for writing and creating the music that people are paying for. Hogwash! Someone had to, you know, encode it. That's worth at least 40%. And hey, these shoes don't shine themselves! So they're pushing to get that rate cut down to a shameful 9%, giving artists even less of a slice of the pie than before.

Of course, Apple, Napster and other large online retailers make the RIAA look like a charity in comparison, with Apple pushing to cut the royalty rate down to an insulting 4%. Yes, Apple wants artists to get a 4% of wholesale royalty rate. Really looking out for those artists, aren't you Steve?

If there was ever a time for a band to try going completely independent, this is it. Why give over 90% of your income away to greedy sleazebags when you can sell your music online without the middleman? This industry needs to be burned to the ground and built back up again; it's broken and it seems less and less likely that it'll be able to be fixed. Two oscillators and a 24dB filter makes it FAT! 16 preset slots to save patches (a revelation for Moog in'81) 37 keys, the dread 'membrane' buttons and the weirdest 'Logan's Run' look; sure it's an oddball but one listen to the incredibly dense bass sounds coming out of it and all is forgiven. As information becomes available, we'll be posting it to this page. The most obvious development over the last year is that it is no longer called BoomChik: it is now the LinnDrum II. There will be two models: the all-digital LinnDrum II and the LinnDrum II Analog, which adds a 4-voice analog synth and 27 dual-function voicing knobs. The LinnDrum II will be available from Roger Linn Design and the LinnDrum II Analog will be available from Dave Smith Instruments.

The operating system emphasizes real-time performance with the ability to drop in and out of record on different beats, play multiple beats simultaneously, switch in and out of song mode, and much more, all without stopping play. Both MPC-style real time and XOX-style step recording are provided, and the 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads—backlit for visual sequence animation—can be assigned to sounds, tunings, beats, pad mutes, or sequence steps. Dedicated buttons exist for touch sensitivity, sound restart, real-time erase and pressure-sensitive note repeat or rolls. 16 megabytes of internal flash memory exist for sound storage, but because sound data is read directly from flash, expanding sound memory is accomplished merely by plugging a compact flash card into the rear panel slot. Inputs and outputs include four audio outs, two sampling/audio processing/drum trigger inputs, phones, USB, MIDI in/out, two expression pedal/foot switch inputs, and four additional direct voice outputs for the Analog model.

Sample playback is enhanced with 8-level velocity switching, dynamic filters and resonators, distortion and lo-fi algorithms, two complex modulation matrices and the ability to use sequence events as modulation sources. The Analog model enables significantly richer voice timbres with its four Curtis chip-based analog voices, analog feedback resonator paths, and dedicated voicing knobs. Performance enhancements include two programmable sliders and dedicated on/off buttons for filter, resonator, amp sim/compressor, EQ, delay and reverb effects.

We hope to be shipping by mid-2008.

View a higher resolution image
Darren Emanuelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09497828724997598107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8050283426092378024.post-75075723045092343322007-12-01T12:57:00.000-08:002007-12-01T13:01:08.040-08:001963 Danelectro Bass
Danelectro 3412 Shorthorn Bass with a case.
