RIAA Wants to Cut Artist royalties

Via gizmodo.com

The RIAA always claims that its looking out for the livelihood of artists when it sues the hell out of alleged pirates, but in reality it's really fighting to keep record industry executives rich by defending an outdated and unsustainable business model. While before the PR team at least made an attempt to make it seem like artists were priority #1, they seem to have given up: the RIAA is now trying to cut down artist's royalties on digital downloads.

Yes, the RIAA doesn't think the record companies are making enough and that musicians are clearly making too much. I mean, they get 13% now. Like they deserve 13% for writing and creating the music that people are paying for. Hogwash! Someone had to, you know, encode it. That's worth at least 40%. And hey, these shoes don't shine themselves! So they're pushing to get that rate cut down to a shameful 9%, giving artists even less of a slice of the pie than before.

Of course, Apple, Napster and other large online retailers make the RIAA look like a charity in comparison, with Apple pushing to cut the royalty rate down to an insulting 4%. Yes, Apple wants artists to get a 4% of wholesale royalty rate. Really looking out for those artists, aren't you Steve?

If there was ever a time for a band to try going completely independent, this is it. Why give over 90% of your income away to greedy sleazebags when you can sell your music online without the middleman? This industry needs to be burned to the ground and built back up again; it's broken and it seems less and less likely that it'll be able to be fixed. [Hollywood Reporter via Slashdot]

Moog Source

Just arrived a vintage Moog Source circa 1981. Two oscillators and a 24dB filter makes it FAT! 16 preset slots to save patches (a revelation for Moog in'81) 37 keys, the dread 'membrane' buttons and the weirdest 'Logan's Run' look; sure it's an oddball but one listen to the incredibly dense bass sounds coming out of it and all is forgiven. We're asking $1099. Drop in and check it out.

Roland TR-808

A beautiful Roland TR-808, you know the one. This one is in great shape. All of the knobs are intact, everything works fine, it's just shy of 100% due to a chip on the front left foot. (see last pic) You'd almost not notice it and of course it in no way affects the operation of the unit. We are including the original programming overlay that helps you learn what's what. I've programmed and recorded this 808 for several of my tracks and it sounds awesome.

Check it out here.

Linndrum II Coming Soon!

Via Matrixsynth and Dave Smith Instruments

LinnDrum II

Many of you have been anxiously awaiting news of BoomChik, the collaboration between Dave and Roger Linn announced at Winter NAMM 2007. As information becomes available, we'll be posting it to this page. The most obvious development over the last year is that it is no longer called BoomChik: it is now the LinnDrum II. There will be two models: the all-digital LinnDrum II and the LinnDrum II Analog, which adds a 4-voice analog synth and 27 dual-function voicing knobs. The LinnDrum II will be available from Roger Linn Design and the LinnDrum II Analog will be available from Dave Smith Instruments.

The operating system emphasizes real-time performance with the ability to drop in and out of record on different beats, play multiple beats simultaneously, switch in and out of song mode, and much more, all without stopping play. Both MPC-style real time and XOX-style step recording are provided, and the 16 velocity- and pressure-sensitive pads—backlit for visual sequence animation—can be assigned to sounds, tunings, beats, pad mutes, or sequence steps. Dedicated buttons exist for touch sensitivity, sound restart, real-time erase and pressure-sensitive note repeat or rolls. 16 megabytes of internal flash memory exist for sound storage, but because sound data is read directly from flash, expanding sound memory is accomplished merely by plugging a compact flash card into the rear panel slot. Inputs and outputs include four audio outs, two sampling/audio processing/drum trigger inputs, phones, USB, MIDI in/out, two expression pedal/foot switch inputs, and four additional direct voice outputs for the Analog model.

Sample playback is enhanced with 8-level velocity switching, dynamic filters and resonators, distortion and lo-fi algorithms, two complex modulation matrices and the ability to use sequence events as modulation sources. The Analog model enables significantly richer voice timbres with its four Curtis chip-based analog voices, analog feedback resonator paths, and dedicated voicing knobs. Performance enhancements include two programmable sliders and dedicated on/off buttons for filter, resonator, amp sim/compressor, EQ, delay and reverb effects.

We hope to be shipping by mid-2008.

1963 Danelectro Bass

Danelectro 3412 Shorthorn Bass with a case. The bass is in good condition with minor wear here and there but nothing major, mostly just nicks in the paint. There's one lipstick pickup, white Tolex binding, double cut body with Bronze or Copper finish, a volume knob and tone knob. It's difficult to tell by the blurry pics but the underside of the neck joint reads "1043" Also a toggle switch which has a very subtle effect on the tone. The neck is straight with dot inlay and rosewood. Overall a cool, cool bass with loads of vintage vibe.

Give us a call or stop in and check it out.
